amongst victorian buildings, you 'll find the skean block, named for elmer skean, the one-time owner of the buildings. inside, the high-ceilinged, tidy restaurant sports comfortable, cherry-colored wood furnishings, huge storefront windows, and, in places, a belle-epoque opulence with velvet-cushioned chairs in the hall and colorful prints of once-upon-a-time paris on its walls. with the meat choices outweighing seafood and pasta selections, the menu draws on rural iowa 's steakhouse heritage, but goes much, much further.
